A stump cut flush is still a stump: it trips people, blunts the mower and sends up shoots. We grind it out below the surface, rake out the grindings and leave the ground ready for whatever you had planned.
We grind stumps from our own removals and stumps someone else left behind years ago. Old, hard stumps are slower, not impossible. Most are done in a morning.
Stump grinding is the standard way to remove a stump. A grinder with a toothed cutting wheel chips the stump and the main surface roots away until it sits well below ground level. The roots further out are left in the soil, where they rot away over time. Nothing is dug up, so the paving, walls and lawn around the stump are left alone.
Many Cape Town stumps sit right against a boundary wall or next to a drain, because that is where the tree was planted to give shade or privacy. We check for pipes and cables before grinding, and work slowly next to walls and kerbs. If roots have already lifted paving, we grind those surface roots out too so the paving can be relaid flat.
Most trees die once the stump is ground out. Some species sucker from the roots, though, and in Cape Town gardens the usual culprits are poplars, some gums and wattles. If your tree is one of them we will tell you before we start, and what to do about any shoots that come up afterwards.
Stump grinding is often booked together with tree removal, so the job is finished in one visit. We also grind old stumps left by other companies years ago. Once the hole is backfilled with topsoil you can lay lawn or replant straight away.
Grinding below ground level removes the crown that shoots regrow from. Some species sucker from roots; we will tell you if yours is one.
Usually. Send a photo of the gate or passage and we will confirm before the visit.
Once backfilled and compacted, yes. A ground-out stump does not heave or sink the way a flush-cut one does.
