Tree felling in Constantia: big trees, big gardens, careful access
Constantia gardens are some of the oldest and largest in Cape Town, and the trees match. English oaks with limbs as thick as a car, stone pines and tall cluster pines, gums along old farm boundaries and poplars along the streams. Most of these were planted long before the house next to them was extended or the pool was dug.
Size is only half of it. Long gravel driveways, oak-lined entrances, established lawns and beds all sit between the gate and the tree. We plan the route in before the truck arrives, lay boards where the ground is soft and rig heavy limbs down on ropes so they land where we want them, not in the rose garden.
Shot hole borer and dying oaks
Since the polyphagous shot hole borer reached Cape Town, more oaks and plane trees in the Southern Suburbs are dying back. Signs include small round holes in the bark, wet or sugary staining and whole sections of canopy browning in summer. A badly infested tree can drop limbs without warning. Infested wood should not be carted around as firewood, because that spreads the beetle, so tell us at the quote stage and we will handle the wood accordingly.
